The First Complete Biography of
Tombstone's Most Famous Mayor!
From noted Tombstone author Gary Ledoux.
NANTAN: THE LIFE AND TIME OF JOHN P. CLUM
VOLUME 1 CLAVERACK TO TOMBSTONE 1851-1882
His friends called him brave, daring and resourceful. His detractors called him bombastic, brash and impudent. The Apaches called him "Nantan." Wyatt Earp simply called him "friend." He could handle a gun, or a town council meeting with equal dexterity.
Indian Agent, lawyer, newspaper publisher, mayor, postmaster, postal inspector, lecturer, orator, thespian, founder of the Tombstone Epitaph and more... John P. Clum was a man of many parts - a man of his time.
Here, for the first time, is the complete story of a life lived during some of the most turbulent times, in some of the most unforgiving places on earth. John Clum made his mark in the development of two great American frontiers and his influence of those times still reverberates today.
Nantan: The Life and Times of John P. Clum Volume 1 covers his life from birth in 1851 in the New York farming community of Claverack, his school days, and his time as one of the country's first weathermen in the wilds of Santa Fe. He was one of the most successful Indian Agents in the history of the Arizona Territory, being the only person to ever capture the renegade Geronimo at gunpoint while, at the same time, being the west's foremost advocate for Indian rights. He was the old west's most noted Mayor of the west's best known city - Tombstone. And he founded what has become one of the west's most enduring icons, the Tombstone Epitaph newspaper.

What others are saying about "Nantan"
“Gary Ledoux’s research into John Clum has been exhaustive.”
“Nantan is quite well written, well organized and pleasant to read. (It will) …be an important source for researchers long into the future.”
“When Gary Ledoux completes this monumental task (Volume 1 and Volume 2 due out in 2008) obviously a labor of love, some 1,000 pages on the subject of Clum’s life will be available…”
Neil Carmony / Author – Apache Days & Tombstone Nights The Story of John P. Clum 1997
“You have saved me much time and effort!! Now when our family wants information about John P.'s first 30 years, I just refer them to your definitive work "Nantan" and they can get the answers directly or find sources where the answers can be found. It is an informative and fun read. I can't wait for Volume II.”
Woody Clum / Great grandson of John P. Clum
(The Life and Time of John P. Clum Volume 1) “…was a fine effort in historical research and writing. I would like to be among those who will welcome author Ledoux to the ranks of real historical researchers whose work is on the town of Tombstone and its people. Dedicated researchers in said area are too few and ‘rehashers’ too many. Gary’s book includes all the essentials – new photos, documents and new information.”
Ben T. Traywick / Official Tombstone Historian As seen in the Tombstone Epitaph February 2008
Nantan Volume 1 is) “…sketched in extraordinarily rich detail by Gary Ledoux…”
“…Ledoux’s generous use of his research material provides what will likely be remembered as the definitive biography on Clum. Western researchers will appreciate a complete narrative that is backed up by full chapter notes, an appendix, bibliography and index.”
“…Ledoux does a solid job of avoiding a descent into hagiography.”
Frederick Schoemehl / Editor - Tombstone Epitaph January 2008
“The definitive book on Clum."
Kevin Mulkins / K&B Books
"I just finished reading Gary's new book 'Nantan: The Life & Times of John P. Clum' and I highly recommend and suggest all fans of western history purchase this great book. It's a perfect addition to anyone's collection shelf. Without doubt this is one the best biography's I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The book is an excellent example of how a biography should be presented, meticulously researched and very entertaining. I found Gary's writing style pleasant, historically accurate and informative all at the same time. Not an easy task and in my opinion rarely achieved." Jim Groom / Book Purchaser
“Thank you Gary for ‘Nantan’, but mostly thank you for the priceless gift you have given us, his family, by writing such a loving and comprehensive story. The book is indeed a treasure.”
Vicki Vachon Grant / Granddaughter of John P. Clum
“I hardly expected such a monumental review of the Apaches history; what a formidable task you took on!”
“First, I was impressed; not only by your thorough research but by your extensive knowledge of western history. Secondly, I was very impressed by the way you presented Clum as a young man just starting out, and then taking up the formidable task of Indian agent. Really top-notch writing!”
Gary “Shorty” Finkenbinder / Author – The Greenhorn and The Greenhorn Sheriff
